M's Food Find #67

I don't know if the Rockpool post has already wished you had a better dinner in front of you tonight but this one will make you wish you had an even better one or perhaps inspire your lunch tomorrow!

Dad wanted seafood while he was here, and since his clients brought him out to Freo, it made no sense to travel there again. So I took them to Kaili's Bro's in Leederville for lunch. We didn't make any reservations but managed to score something since we were kinda early. I can't believe it really was all packed and full when proper lunch hours kicked in and people started arriving. The chitter chatter and buzz really made the place really lively and homely feeling since we had quite a few large families arriving in spite of the corporate set.

They had a live seafood market just next to the restaurant and while you could select the seafood and have them cook for you, the prices are really not worth that extra effort I reckon because the chefs already did quite well in their selections.

One of our entrees was the garlic prawns. AMAZING and with the slightest hint of butter. Very yummy too. Prawns are a tad overcooked but at least they were fresh so it didn't kill the taste too much. The bread that came with was really good in comparison to that of Rockpool and Modo Mio.

Dad just had to have his chilli mussels. These are pretty hot which is good.

Shared this with Mum, the salmon dish. Very generous portion with a good price to it.

Yummy and quite succulent. Well done.

Sis had to have her fish and chips but of course, a better grade compared to Freo's. Light crispy fresh batter is the key I reckon. yumyum, could have had more me and her! haha

We also ordered the breaded scallops. Ohhhhh, these were so good! One each wasn't enough! The scallops were so fresh and juicy. The hint of butter and garlic and the breaded top bits go so perfectly with the sweetness of the scallops. Top job!

We sat next to the table which ordered the crab linguine which smelled divine! Would have to go back and try that one next. We didn't have any desserts since we were in Leedy and we had San Churros to go to or Green's if you want!

M's Food Find #55

An overdue food find post from a couple of weeks back. Anna and I decided to head back down to Burswood and this time we had made our reservation a week in advance for it. After our mixed Sirocco experience, we were hoping for a much better one at (A)lure Restaurant and Bar within the Intercontinental Hotel.

Lovely to be greeted with complimentary canape of a smoked salmon mousse in a little icecream waffle cone. It was just cute and the smoked salmon mousse was very mild. Not overpoweringly fishy.

Way better table settings and properly served with linen across our laps.

Presented with the bread plate. Two different ones to share. The lighter looking one was chock full of olives and gave the bread a boost of saltiness and flavour. The darker brown one in the foreground was pumpkin seeds (I think?) had a harder crust but the insides were moist in comparison. Tastes better with the butter.

Anna ordered the lamb rack, about AUD48?

With brie cheese and a mashed potato side. The lamb was perfectly cooked and tender. Lovely pink and properly done in medium. The brie cheese is a perfect touch to the lamb, just adds this garlicky creamy aftertaste.

I ordered the roasted pork belly. No-brainer because I love my pork belly. It was topped generously with a skewer of five AMAZINGLY sweet scallops and a side of mashed potatos with a crust.

Finished with mustard on the side.

price was about AUD42?

The skin was properly crunchy and the meat was properly layered with the right amount of fats. Tender and absorbed the braised flavour well. The sweetness of scallops properly complimented the salty pork.

After such satisfaction, we asked for the dessert menu and took us a while to decide.

The decision: The Bakewell tart with vanilla bean ice cream. I was sold on the ice cream bit.

What a pretty little sight. Don't let that unimpressive looking thin rectangular piece of tart fool you by the way.

The tart was in the perfect temperature, warm and delicious. The vanilla bean ice cream was fragrant and creamy. I love the tart, so much. I wish I had the whole thing and more. The toasted almonds gave the cake-y bit a kick, and that is saying alot because I generally am not a fan of almonds. I would go back and pay AUD17 for it again.

The setting was very dim and very classy. The service was attentive and professional. Overall, levels above that of Sirocco in all aspects. Prices are abit more expensive but well worth every cent and penny more. We used the one-for-one deal for our maincourse with the entertainment book and paid about AUD32 per person. What a steal. I thoroughly enjoyed my alluring experience at (A)lure.

M's Food Find #50

Ahhh, yet another milestone for the blog. 50th Food Find! Alright, so it is split between food places in Singapore and Perth, but still! Worth a small celebration eh. Which is why I decided to blog about dinner last Saturday at Sirocco in Holiday Inn Burswood.

It is a fine dining restaurant at one of the nicest places to go out to in Perth. Burswood is the casino here and most people dress up all nicely. Reservations are of utmost importance. And nearly a week in advance or more, if you want a good timeslot.

We made this reservation mere hours before our dinner, only after we found out (A)lure was full for the night. Scored a late dinner slot at 8ish pm. For a fine dining experience, the way the menu is presented is already a let down.

Cute wine glass though. About the only good thing.

A pretty noisy atmosphere for a classy place like this. I am all for good vibes and chats and friendly camaraderie. Just, there are times and places for it. Attentive service though.

Another HUGE letdown is their place mat or rather, a square piece of white 'mahjong' paper spread over the marble top. Errrrrrr. like a tablecloth will be so much nicer. And there isn't even ANY linen to lay across the laps. We get paper serviettes instead. Alright.... and we are paying how much again?!

We chose the Seafood Platter (min. 2 pax) which is AUD49 per head. We used her entertainment card which gives us a AUD35 discount of the bill.

On the lower plate, we have grilled white baiting, fresh scallops, fish sticks (not the frozen fish sticks kind you find in supermarkets), and REALLY GOOD chips/fries. The little bowl of yellow goodness is melted garlic butter. Now, THAT I really like. The scallops were sweet and very nicely cooked. The fish sticks were VERY yummy. However as for the grilled fish, we had it at the very end so it was cold and kinda tough. Don't want to be unfair about it since I do realise we should have it at the beginning when it is served. Perhaps you will learn from my mistake!

Ahhhhh the beautiful top plate filled with the fresh seafood. Wonderfully cooked and sweet prawns. My first time actually having to de-shell the prawns myself. I usually have dad or someone to help me with it. Anna refused to help me. Mussels were alright. Nothing special. Lobster was tender and sweet but a little cold... Not the best I have had. Oysters were fresh and had a salty seawater taste to it. I liked it.

Comes with a trio of sauces. Garlic vinegar, thousand island and tartare. Though if you were to focus and let the seafood shine, none of these sauces would have been neccessary...

We capped our dinner off with a dessert, panna cotta since Anna wanted it. Although the Grand Marnier Parfait was a hot favourite with other diners!

Photos credits: mayydiaries.blogspot.com
The dessert came with the shortbread cookie which was buttery yumminess in my opinion. Panna cotta was unfortunately ANOTHER disappointment. Sure the thyme added a whole level of difference and taste. But the panna cotta itself was just not done right. The baked dessert just felt overcooked like eating the egg custard of an egg tart not in a good way because the egg custard is not fluid and melt in your mouth goodness. One that make you go oooooo.

I don't know what I was quite looking for BUT I know that is NOT it. The whole experience was just not satisfying. And frankly I am glad my first time there, we managed to have a little discount from the card BUT even if I had the card next year, I am quite certain I will not be returning.

I am a little sad I could not do a good review when I looked back at these photos and wrote this. But perhaps you want to prove me wrong and you have had a wonderful experience then. Well, lucky you. NEVER MIND THAT, Burswood has alot more to offer in the other restaurants and I can tell you that nothing can stand in the way of a full dinner crowd every weekend.

M's Food Find #43

Now before I whisk off to do some more stuff, such as buying more cupcakes for Starlight Foundation in uni, let's finish this post on a new food find. Seafood at the Red Cray along Great Eastern Highway. They are known for their lobster and judging from the 2 orders we had, they looked real good. And taste pretty fresh and sweet too according to my dinner companions.

Red Cray Seafood & Grill Restaurant

86 Great Eastern Highway
Belmont WA 6104
(08) 9479 7000

We headed there to celebrate Nurun's birthday, but really there were Shiyu and Daniel's birthdays too in April. So after some shopping in the city Friday night, we drove down to The Red Cray. I went with Sam and we got a wee bit lost. It is such a classy restaurant hidden in the midst of warehouses and such. It was night obviously and so dark. So peel open your eyes and you will spot it eventually with its bright lights and glass panels.

We started off with scallops and mash as entree. They were big and juicy. Seared properly. For AUD19, there are no complaints.

Crazy, this seafood platter for two. Consisting for battered fish, grilled fish, mussels, oysters, prawns, calamari and the fried cakes which I cannot quite remember. But I distinctly remember its either mushrooms or crab cakes. NEVERTHELESS for AUD75, it is way worth it for two big eaters or three/four small eaters.

Fresh kilpatrick oysters.

One of the lobsters special. We ordered the Royale and Maine (unsure) if I was not wrong.

Huge portions eh. But better reviews for the first lobster photo.

Grilled whiting for Shiyu. Looks like a good choice.

Caesar salad, what else can I say. I prefer Dome's but hey, bacon bits and croutons I shan't complain.

We ordered a brownie mudpie with ice cream and requested for a candle. Unfortunately, even when we told the waitress that, not that I was expecting anything but a ncie small piece of complimentary cake plus this would be a good touch of custmer service. By this time, we were all so full from dinner, only Shiyu and Nurun were left to finish it after the other three took a forkful.

There we have it, my dinner companions and I. Sam doesn't do photos, so well he's missing in here. So for those of you looking for a new place to eat in Perth and somewhere different for a special occasion, this one place will do it for you. Most patrons were dressed very nicely for dinner and enjoying the classy friendly ambience.
