Bangkok - Food Part 1

I LOVE BANGKOK. I truly do. I go back every year and when I failed to do so last year, I felt so weird and made sure I had to return this year. And I did.

Sure feels like the year is better now. Never mind the shopping. I love the food and its so difficult for me to properly satisfy my Thai food cravings anywhere else in the world.

Even at the Platinum Mall foodcourt, the food is 100% craving-satisfactory.

I had been wanting this Pad Thai for a year now. And no matter where I ordered it in Perth or Singapore, I sure wasn't happy. But now I am. (till the next time)

Thai Style Orh luak, vastly different from Singapore and yummier in my opinion.

Tom Yum Soup, woah, this sweet spicy sour dish. It hits all the right notes.

And of course the mango sticky rice to end any meal. YUMS.

And I heard about the new chic place in town for this traditional Thai dish, a fresh take on it... at Mango Tango in the heart of Siam Square.

We had to queue for abit because the place is really small but soooooo popular!

Ordered the set and a plum iced tea.

Looks pretty eh? Mango with the sticky rice and mango pudding and mango ice cream. truly mango-licious! looking and sounding, that is. Taste wise... I rather go have it at the foodcourt. the mango was bland, the sticky rice wayyyyy too small a portion, and i have had better pudding and ice cream. Even my mango yogurt that I ate in perth this afternoon tastes more like mangoes.

Maybe I will go back and try the other mango desserts they have on offer. But I wont count on this place to satisfy my Mango Sticky Rice craving.

After all the Thai food, sometimes I just want abit of variety. So I have Japanese food at Fuji Restaurant which is a chain and have it nearly everywhere.

Otherwise, we scored a good find this trip for wanton mee and braised pork rice!!!

Just the alley next to the new mall Shibuya at Pratunam across Platinum.

No idea what the Thai words say, but I see x2 so THAT's IT!

Quite packed for a non-descript place and air-conditioned too. Good thing because it was scorching!

We had both the soup and dry versions. cant say which is better. But I really like the mee and charsiew. The wantons were so-so. But yummy regardless!

And the braised pork rice is a nice change from the Thai food but nothing too WOW. reasonably yummy though. Would I come back? YES.

Oh Bangkok, I miss you already.

Shoestopper #41

Yet another freezing day here in Perth but quite a day. Woke up early for Kungfu Panda 2 with Pat at 10am. Who watches movies this early?! Apparently, quite a few. Haha. Went to uni for a meeting before lunch with Pat and his friend. Haven't seen the duo for quite some time now. But it was nice in a way.

Anyway, point of this post is not what I did today, its on a rather quirky pair of shoes I owned. Past tense, because it had to be retired earlier this year...

Here it is! My first pair of cloth shoes. Absolutely quirky and nothing quite like what I usually have. Still, I don't know if you can see the appeal but I had to have it. I bought this pair of flower printed darlings in Bangkok's Platinum mall for only 100baht so that should be about SGD4.

It was the last pair in my size, I consider it a sign and when I tried them on, it reaffirms my belief that I had to have it. Thank goodness they were affordable ;)

Cloth shoes are just so so comfortable and its soles are actually made out of pretty solid material and while it is very flat, it is not uncomfortable. It is so pretty and dainty to put on. Haven't seen anything else quite like it ever since.

I was super upset to let it go but the sides were already coming loose and tearing so to speak. They sure don't last very long...

Well pretty shoes, I hope I meet your twin one day soon and I will buy me some more. Thank you for gracing my life. I miss you very much.

Mayy's Closet #45

Yes, I am SO BORED. While I may finally be sleeping right again after weeks, I feel this sense of loss. Like what now?! Nothing to do, sighs. Alright, being with clothes and shoes make me happy. And a backlog awaits for this blog.

On a random Friday morning getting ready for uni, I chose the black cropped top with white lace panel sides, my Esprit brown pants and Shoestopper #33. It was comfortable and I still felt like a rockstar. No I didnt amp this look up and left the eyeliner untouched.

In the toilet after class.
I got the cropped top from Bangkok Chatuchak (I think). I really have no idea actually why I got it in the first place. Not that I don't like it but I think I can live without it. So I am looking to giving this away. To anyone who wants it. Friends, just email me or give me a shout out on fb or twitter. It is comfortable and I like that it is the right length to wear it just as a top and still look like you are not overdoing it.

Alternatively, wear it with a highwaisted skirt or highwaisted shorts or pants. The lace side panels are a little see through but its not like you are walking around with your arms lifted right!? I mean, I dont but it doesnt mean you cannot.

So yeah, sometimes impulse buying really gets you. Especially when you are on holidays. It is like you get home and say, do I really need this?! Or when did I get this?! Goodness...if only we are think clearly when shopping. I am glad that Shiyu has been my shopping companion these past few days. She has stopped me from oversplurging. Not that I would have minded, but I needed someone to say LOOK, you already have something similar in your closet or just hang on and dont buy it on impulse. Sighs.

Till my next closet raid, Mayy xo

Shoestopper #26 (x 3)

It's once again Thursday. My day of cleaning and chores and chilling. I don't think my supervisors will be pleased but I need this day to recharge. Weekends are not for recharging. Thursday is. Anyway, bad luck with weather today and I shall not get annoyed by repeating what happened. So let's leave it at that and pray for better luck. Meantime, WA got a bit of rain this morning after a dry spell and hot weather. It officially brought the temperature down to the 20s and we welcome Autumn. The weather today reminded me of the three, yes THREE pairs of shoes I have in my current collection , yes CURRENT. Without further ado, Shoestoppers #26 x 3. These two pairs are here with me in Perth. I bought them both in my old neighbourhood in Singapore. From a very old shoe stall in the wet markets. Not the most glamourous of places but hey! So long as the shoes are to my liking, the place it came from doesn't matter! After all, they all come from China. HAHAHA. Anyway, one pair of these costs me less than SGD10. I cannot remember how much I got them for but I know cheap is it. I actually bought a black one too. But the black one's pretty painful and split so I threw that away.

My favourite out of the three is the transparent one. I wear it all the time when I run out of ideas or I feel like I can't find anything to match my outfit with. Being of non-colour, it goes. Just looks like I am not wearing any shoes. But I ain't no Aussie bogan. I keep my feet clean and glamourous.

The bronze one is really my rain shoes. When the weather is wet and yucky (I HATE HATE HATE RAIN), I wear them. It is rubber and jelly. It can afford to be wet. It is meant to be wet. Except my feet wil get wet too at times which makes Mayy a very very unhappy girl. One of the things I hate most in the world is wet feet. But this bronze pair puts in its best effort to keep my feet dry. So thank you darling, Mummy appreciates your efforts.

And there's this pristine white pair. It is my FIRST pair of jelly flats which I scored in Bangkok. It says size 41 but when I tried it on, I JUST KNEW it was coming home with Mama. It fits me, and the insoles are UNBELIEVABLY soft. I always feel like I am walking on air. ALWAYS, and I am not exaggerating. That is how comfortable it is. White is high maintenance but I keep it clean and only ever wear it when the need arises. I want to prolong its life with me. I even remembered which shop I got it from in Bangkok. The above two pairs cannot compare to this one. The standards just don't match up. Nevertheless at 100baht (approx. SGD4), I am a very lucky girl indeed to score a steal like this.

Do you have a particular shoe design in multiple pairs and different colours? I had this at x 4, but now x 3. Do I hear a x 5 from anyone?

Shoestopper #22

Enough with Rubi flats and sandals! Let's elevate ourselves for the weekend and put on a pair of heels for that nice weekend dinner.

Not exactly the pair I will be putting on tonight, but I will be wearing a blue dress. Anyhow, this pair of robin-egg blue slingbacks was purchased quite a long while back in Bangkok and I really liked the shoebox and brand: Princess!

Now there is a trend here with my shoe collection. I am usually regretting my slingback heels purchases because I can NEVER wear slingbacks properly! Sighs. Pity as some are really pretty. The back part ALWAYS slips off. But I know friends and cousins who don't get that problem. I guess it is just the arch of my feet and perhaps the way I walk. I have tried all sorts of methods and they haven't yet worked.

I bought this pair because I really liked the colour combination, tiffany blue and gold. It does give this sense of royalty with it. I am not a fan of the green soles but no one can see it when I wear! Except they peel off, so it got to the point where they are no longer really wearable. The heels of this particular pair is also not that high, at about 2inches? It is quite comfortable but the quality is all that good. Also, if you wear it too long, the peeptoes friction will cause blisters. Ouch.

Now, I am searching for that colour combination in another pair of shoes. Hopefully I do find it one of these days! Anyway, what are YOUR thoughts on slingbacks? Yay or nay?

Shoestopper #9

Enough about food for now, it is back to my favourite topic, shoes. However, it IS Singapore and food is a HUGE part of life here. Once going back to Perth, there will fewer food finds I think. But don't fret, I will share more on other stuff close to my heart.

Mum and I decided to head out to NEX megamall in Serangoon to buy Cookie's food and have some lunch. Being CNY, I get to wear new stuff without Mum saying something. So I finally decided to wear a new pair of sandals I got from my Bangkok trip in mid 2010. From the big Platinum mall.

Don't you think the candy colours are the cutest? If you know me, it comes as no surprise that I would choose that particular shade of green or pink (though really, pink is not a favourite colour. It is all just purely coincidental!).

Yeah, I like the colour combinations. I like the design. I like that it is not common and special. I like that it is comfortable and not too hard because it does look like the sole is too stiff and the straps may cut. But they don't at all. I like that it is pretty girly and cute. Yet it is not over the top and too 'act-cute'.

I like that it fits my feet well and matches my skin tone. I wore a blue dress with it and it still looked alright. So even if it looked like it is difficult to match with outfits, I would disagree. Because of the white and gold parts, you can really wear it with almost anything! Er, except formal and corporate wear but that is just no need for me to tell you that.

You know, sometimes flat sandals or shoes are too flat to last a long time in it or too flat that it becomes uncomfortable? Well, this one isn't. The little black lift behind manages to make it look flat yet whe you wear it, you don't feel like your feet has no support.

Oh alright, I love this pair. Enough said.
