M's Food Find #75 (ni)

Heyheyhey! Time for some good food (comparing to othe restaurants in Perth).

I managed to squeeze in lunch with a friend at Nobu during my busy break before returning home. I find the lunch menu pretty affordable and good for value.

We both ordered the bento box with black miso cod.

This was very refreshing on the palate.

The sushi were nicely formed.

The black cod miso was way smaller than the ala carte one which is understandable but the freshness and taste didnt live up to expectations unfortunately. The tempura prawn salad was yummy but I felt the sauce was too overpowering. Service during lunch is also quick and fussfree and I like the brighter settings.

I went back for a second dinner in the later weeks which turned out to be very disappointing and unlike my first time. Rice served was not japanese rice which is quite sad for a Japanese restaurant of this calibre. And perhaps because Tiger Woods and other golfers had a private function the night before, the quality of food I received was varied and not at all satisfying. Even my 'heavenly' Otoro sashimi slices.

I love Nobu but perhaps, they need to always keep check on their standards. Shouldnt be slipping so quickly eh?

M's Food Find #80

In preparation for the next semester, here's a new place Curtin students can go for in the Waterford Plaza. Tenten can get quite boring albeit pretty good food if we are not fussy, Burger edge is bad for the waistline if too regular visits, Mikasa and Chiliz are old hat.

Jamaica Blue opens in the new wing across the chocolate lounge and looks a world away from books and laptops.

Bright and sunny interior and furnishings.

I absolutely loved the swivel postal stamped printed chairs. They are so comfortable as well!

Serving all-day brekkie if I am not wrong and pretty good coffee.

You also have regular meal choices.

They have their own magazine and I poached one home ;) because of some of the recipes in the mag and Chef Heston is an inspiration.

Sam's full brekkie. Looks nothing special but I guess it should be alright since someone polished the lot off.

The yummy chicken avocado salad!

My smoked salmon eggs ben. A tad too heavy on the hollandaise sauce but otherwise acceptable. Too expensive for the small amount of food in my opinion.

Poached perfectly...
Chia Ling's cinnamon french toast... doesnt look too appetising but when she cut into them, they looked very soft and fluffy!

Since it was quite a hot day, we settled for some chillers. Wished they were stronger on the coffee taste. Heavens know how much I needed coffee... But since Im back in Singapore, I need a stiff drink. I was good on my plane back but lets hope its not the tone for my vacation. Girl needs to let her hair down once in a while.

Back to this place, glad to have it near uni when I need a quick brunch fix.

Till my next food find, Mayy xo

M's Food Find #79

Hello all, a slew of food find posts of Perth will find its way to this blog tonight but not of any good standard. You can be the judge and should you be feeling adventurous and bored during summer, you can check them out regardless of my posts!

Number 79 brings us to the suburb of Highgate, The Queens Pub.

My little tiny dessert wine.

A lamb dinner which was done quite nicely. Nothing to rave about and on the night I went with my friend, it was so packed and way noisy. I really dont like it. Its not a place to sit down and hang out. The noise bounces all round and service was mighty slow.

My dinner of pork and prawns. Prawns were alright, nothing special and the sweetchilli more than saves the dish.

we shared the blueberry cheesecake with rum and raisin ice cream which was nothing to scream about again. Its the regular pub dinner I suppose.

What I loved about this dinner is that my dinner companion and I always love a good entree of turkish bread and dips. Cant go wrong with soft warm bread.

Abit sad come to think about it when thats the best part of the meal. Not even dessert left a lasting impression, safe to say I wont be back for dinner but maybe drinks with friends in the outside courtyard during summer will be nice.

So Close - Jon Mclaughlin

You`re in my arms
And all the world is calm
The music playing on for only two
So close together
And when I`m with you
So close to feeling alive

A life goes by
Romantic dreams will stop
So I bid mine goodbye and never knew
So close was waiting, waiting here with you
And now forever I know
All that I wanted to hold you
So close

So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
And now you`re beside me and look how far we`ve come
So far we are so close

How could I face the faceless days
If I should lose you now?
We`re so close
To reaching that famous happy end
And almost believing this was not pretend
Let`s go on dreaming for we know we are
So close
So close
And still so far

never settle

Just when I thought I might settle
that this was my intended
that maybe I should accept 'reality'

I saw how others have found perfection
I saw there can be unlimited happiness
I saw that patience really is a virtue

Perhaps what the heavens wanted for me
was to focus on building the foundation of my future
and gradually as that solidifies,
i'll be able to enjoy this fully

Besides I'm enjoying
what life has to offer me right now
finding answers to questions
trying to understand life's complexities

I think
only my heart will know when it is ready
for its higher destiny
nothing is worth settling for lesser

for now, sorry and
let's enjoy the company and
all of life's offerings.

Storybook Confection

Looking for perfection,
that storybook confection
It stays elusive
but is anyone willing to die looking for it?

Would you rather have
a lifetime of comfortable
or a flash of fairytale passion?

Seeking for forever
the human quest so few conquered
The endings lasting
The tales inspiring

Before,
They say it was like black & white.
After,
there was life in their lives.

So there remains believers
and those who fell wayward
To those who stuck till the end,
it was their own storybook confection,
a tale to tell and enchant.

Water, the essence of life.
Especially mine where I grew up around, in body and mind.
From interests to soul.

Fluidity eludes my personal life, my thoughts.
Never a calm moment until I see the hint of clear blue,
hear the sounds of waves softly crashing,
smell the salty sea breeze.
Perhaps this answers some of the questions I ask myself.
The most important, to stay or to leave.

From cruise vacations to working for daddy,
lunches, long walks alone and tennis camps
all at Raffles Marina and Virgo, give me time to think.
No one can ever understand the power of water over me.

I see my smile, the girl in past photos.
These days my own smile feels fake, even to me.
Few, can make me genuinely laugh.
For them, I cherish wordlessly to no end.
Maybe because they dont pry,
or perhaps wordlessly understand my walls.
Better yet, play along and pretend my life is picture perfect.

Its time I admit, I have been different for awhile now.
No, I dont quite like these changes.
But the facade is the only real thing I know, for now.
Till I rediscover the smile, the trapdoor remained locked.

nothing quite as complicated,
nothing quite as simple to shut one's life down,
change someone quite drastically,
hide away.

Others may guess and assume reasons,
but nothing really comes close to the truth.
Common simplemindedness guess at relationships, so-called love.
But trust when I say it is not
and life (especially mine) doesnt revolve around that.
Heart affairs do not generate from only one such avenue.

It may be experiences, daily matters,
little things that build to the cynicality of the mind.
Build to the walls and guards and moat and crocodiles
around the heart.

Where thoughts meander through the fields and forests
confusion and loss take over.
Some find their way back
takes moments, days, years,
or maybe never.
Admiration goes towards those who find and crawl their way back.

After all, it all boils down to choices.
Remain hidden behind the icy cold facade, lost to the truth?
Dig deep, find the inner bizaare and heartening reality?
Where complexity and volatilty runs amok yet quite gratifying.

Je crois, quelqu'un ou quelque chose détient la clé de ma trappe.

A Little Note from Mayy

"So many thoughts.
All unwritten and unspoken, of which the heart and mind may no longer contain.
How then does one fill up the already filled bottle?
Perhaps by building walls, freezing emotions
and sweeping things under the carpet of one's mind.

That in turn creates a vicious cycle, seemingly bottomless pit.
Pray tell what ways to escape such dreaded fate
as tears are not acceptable?
"

Today, Mayy...

Hey everyone! Today is my fourth day back home in Singapore. Sorry I have been so busy and unable to blog as I was rushing around my last week in Perth and then coming home to finish up some details and meeting some deadlines.

I managed to squeeze in a cultural experience yesterday with one of my best girls, Xin Hui. We attended the Titanic exhibition at Marina Bay Sands and we both thought it was such an amazing 'expedition'. Very realistic recreations from deck settings to the smell of the decks. For a cruise lover like me, I wished the Titanic didnt meet such a tragic end. If you haven't been, don't miss it especially if you are a fan.

Had a really nice sisterly dinner on Saturday at P.S. Cafe Ann Siang Hill with my sis.

Sunday - garage sale at my aunt's and dinner at one of my fave Japanese restaurants, Yamagawa.

Monday - thought it was a stay home day but ended up finishing my research early and lunch w Sam who just touched down and Mick. Looking at his place, kinda made me wished I was back in Perth. Then Titanic with Xin Hui. Went for a browse at the LV Maison Island too. Nothing that caught my eye unfortunately.

Tuesday today - Facial in the morning, slightly pampered. Full body massage next week YAY! And spent lunch with my fifth aunt and mum at one of my fave dimsum places - Taste Paradise in Ion. The two top chefs whom my aunt knows were there so there were some good conversations when they joined us. I also ended my lunch on a high note with one of the most unqiue creations of orh nee my fave Teochew dessert.

I came home late in the afternoon and spent my early evening drawing up some plans and making notes on a very important part of my life that will soon be revealed. Some of you may know what's up so yeah =)

But what now for Wednesday? Maybe the international orchid show at MBS with mum. But all I really want is a drink. Or two.

Till the water falls, Mayy xo
