mayyn meal - IS Donburi

a late lunch/early dinner rendezvous with C on a weekday afternoon in Northbridge brought us to this little Japanese place. She has always wanted to try it and I thought I would go along to see what the fuss is all about.

always passed by it and never thought it was tempting me in. but here I am.

sat outside as the inside was too close to the kitchen and we didn't want to smell.

ordered the salmon lover's platter which looked amazing when it arrived.

ordered the Dancing Crab Roll as well as it sounds pretty good on the menu.

It all arrived looking amazing.
However the dancing crab roll was not too good and just too much rice with not much filling.
Can't really taste the soft shell crab as well.
As for the salmon sushi platter, it was quite good. The sashimi was really quite fresh by Perth's standards.
The aburi salmon roll was yummy.

Overall, I don't think I would go down to Northbridge just for it. It was not a bad place but just alright. Would give it a 6.5/10 or even a 7.

mayyn meal - Mary Street Bakery in Mount Lawley

finally made my way down to Mary Street Bakery in Mount Lawley, one of the more talked-about cafes on the scene for the past year.

right on the corner and distinguishable only by the pink neon lights.

a small menu for the breakfast. I missed out on that pork belly and kimchi banh mi they had sometime last year. darn. wished I knew when they would have that again on the menu.

cool lights

a nice indoor decor of wood and greens. very eco friendly I suppose.

love love love that big plant thing on the wall. so cool.

i had a green juice to start my day while my date had a flat white. I felt the juice was too small and expensive. It tasted great but really wished it was a bigger serving.

I ordered the corn fritters with a poached egg and chilli onion jam. Asian inspired I felt.

The corn fritters were generously sized and pretty good even thought I thought they were a little too brown. The jam was amazing and goes great with the fritters but alittle too oily.
The poached egg was a disappointment because it looked amazing but no runny yolk.

P had the "pork in a blanket" with fried egg. He thought it was not a bad meal. I tried some and just felt in general, abit overcooked.

my thoughts on this place:
1. missed the mark with the overcooking. just don't think it is as amazing as what everyone says.
2. will i return? perhaps, if i am around and not feeling like going to the merchant or solomon's.

Overall, maybe I would give it a 4.5 or 5. out of 10.

mayyn meal - Sayers Sister

WE FOUND IT. We had tried looking for it last year and to no avail because my GPS failed miserably and we didnt think Northbridge could go so far up! But the suburb did and I was glad to discover a milder and quieter and serene side to it.

Sayers Sister in the early hours of morning.

We hit up the place before 9am and found the place to be quite full already! Full of families, friends, old couples, girlfriends just chattering away as if it was 10am, full of life and energy. That is why I love Perth because of the lifestyle.

From the benchtop seatings to finally getting a small table on the corner with comfy chairs.

Prints for the morning.

The menu is different from Sayers in Leederville which is good but the style is the same, you can tell where they are coming from on the menu. I love that. Our food took awhile but I was happy to wait because I know Sayers always put up good food.

My mushrooms with lemon myrtle and fried eggs on toast.

Initially thought it was only one egg...

BUT it was a double sunny side up. I liked that. It didnt look like much but it sure was filling! It originally came with bacon which I swapped for a side of spinach. The dish already comes with spinach so it possibly wasnt the best idea. The lemon lent it a bit of a sour punch which was great.

The birthday girl's brunch of poached egg and prosciutto. Another filling option. She enjoyed it as well.

Definitely worth going back for, Sayers Sister but when we left the place, a long queue had started forming on the sidewalk for it. It is not saying this place seats very few people but it sure is popular!

Worth the hype.

update:

Visited Sayers Sister with sis on New Year's Eve morning. Definitely good to catch up with her just us two early in the morning with good food and coffee

My Bubble and Squeak meal which was delicious and so filling.

Her grilled asparagus and pancetta meal with special request of Brioche instead of toast. SO GOOD! worth swapping for brioche.

mayyn meal - Greenhouse

Greenhouse has become such a Perth icon in the city. The building structure is unique and unmissable. I never really gave it a try because going into the city in the morning if you ain't working there was abit of a hassle. Anyhow, found my way there finally when the family came to visit and we needed food in the city.

Cute chairs!

A long line outside waiting for coffee...

A very very simple menu...

Had a muffin because Dad was starving. It was a good muffin, not very dense and I love the oats bits on top.

Dumplings in soup was something different. Sounded interesting and the Asian inspired flavours caught my father's attention. It was...kinda weird.

Poached eggs on toast needs no introduction.

Ordered the sausages potato cake meal which sounded good but really wasn't good at all. Just felt everything was too expensive for the quality.

Even bacon didn't taste right. Overcooked may the word I was looking for. Too much frying too.

Definitely a subpar experience not keen on repeating at all.
