M's Food Find #50

Ahhh, yet another milestone for the blog. 50th Food Find! Alright, so it is split between food places in Singapore and Perth, but still! Worth a small celebration eh. Which is why I decided to blog about dinner last Saturday at Sirocco in Holiday Inn Burswood.

It is a fine dining restaurant at one of the nicest places to go out to in Perth. Burswood is the casino here and most people dress up all nicely. Reservations are of utmost importance. And nearly a week in advance or more, if you want a good timeslot.

We made this reservation mere hours before our dinner, only after we found out (A)lure was full for the night. Scored a late dinner slot at 8ish pm. For a fine dining experience, the way the menu is presented is already a let down.

Cute wine glass though. About the only good thing.

A pretty noisy atmosphere for a classy place like this. I am all for good vibes and chats and friendly camaraderie. Just, there are times and places for it. Attentive service though.

Another HUGE letdown is their place mat or rather, a square piece of white 'mahjong' paper spread over the marble top. Errrrrrr. like a tablecloth will be so much nicer. And there isn't even ANY linen to lay across the laps. We get paper serviettes instead. Alright.... and we are paying how much again?!

We chose the Seafood Platter (min. 2 pax) which is AUD49 per head. We used her entertainment card which gives us a AUD35 discount of the bill.

On the lower plate, we have grilled white baiting, fresh scallops, fish sticks (not the frozen fish sticks kind you find in supermarkets), and REALLY GOOD chips/fries. The little bowl of yellow goodness is melted garlic butter. Now, THAT I really like. The scallops were sweet and very nicely cooked. The fish sticks were VERY yummy. However as for the grilled fish, we had it at the very end so it was cold and kinda tough. Don't want to be unfair about it since I do realise we should have it at the beginning when it is served. Perhaps you will learn from my mistake!

Ahhhhh the beautiful top plate filled with the fresh seafood. Wonderfully cooked and sweet prawns. My first time actually having to de-shell the prawns myself. I usually have dad or someone to help me with it. Anna refused to help me. Mussels were alright. Nothing special. Lobster was tender and sweet but a little cold... Not the best I have had. Oysters were fresh and had a salty seawater taste to it. I liked it.

Comes with a trio of sauces. Garlic vinegar, thousand island and tartare. Though if you were to focus and let the seafood shine, none of these sauces would have been neccessary...

We capped our dinner off with a dessert, panna cotta since Anna wanted it. Although the Grand Marnier Parfait was a hot favourite with other diners!

The dessert came with the shortbread cookie which was buttery yumminess in my opinion. Panna cotta was unfortunately ANOTHER disappointment. Sure the thyme added a whole level of difference and taste. But the panna cotta itself was just not done right. The baked dessert just felt overcooked like eating the egg custard of an egg tart not in a good way because the egg custard is not fluid and melt in your mouth goodness. One that make you go oooooo.

I don't know what I was quite looking for BUT I know that is NOT it. The whole experience was just not satisfying. And frankly I am glad my first time there, we managed to have a little discount from the card BUT even if I had the card next year, I am quite certain I will not be returning.

I am a little sad I could not do a good review when I looked back at these photos and wrote this. But perhaps you want to prove me wrong and you have had a wonderful experience then. Well, lucky you. NEVER MIND THAT, Burswood has alot more to offer in the other restaurants and I can tell you that nothing can stand in the way of a full dinner crowd every weekend.

Till my next food find, Mayy xo Sirocco Restaurant and Bar on Urbanspoon
